From по- (po-) +‎ клоня́ть (klonjátʹ) +‎ -ся (-sja), from покло́н (poklón), perhaps from Proto-Indo-European *ḱel- (to incline); compare Russian склон (sklon), склоне́ние (sklonénije); per Vasmer, cognates include Danish huld, Old Norse hallr, Gothic 𐌷𐌿𐌻𐌸𐍃 (hulþs, clement), Latin ausculto, but see further клони́ть (klonítʹ).
