Onomatopoeic from Proto-Slavic *pľamъ (chomp, tap, pit-a-pat) + -пам (-pam). Cognate to Russian пля́мкать (pljámkatʹ, to munch) (colloquial), Ukrainian пля́мкати (pljámkaty, to make noise with the lips).
