Etymology

From Proto-Slavic *pľьvati, from Proto-Indo-European *(s)ptyēw- (to spit, vomit). Akin to Ancient Greek πτύω (ptúō), Latin spuō, Old English spīwan (whence modern English spew), Old Armenian թուք (tʻukʻ), Sanskrit ष्ठीवति (ṣṭhīvati).
