[edit]пло́ский (plóskij, “flat”, adjective) + -о- (-o-) + хвост m (xvost, “tail”, noun), literally “flat-tail”. A calque of translingual Laticauda f, from Latin lātus (“wide, broad”, adjective) + Latin cauda f (“tail”), literally “broad-tail”.
