From оу- (u-) +‎ Proto-Slavic *męknǫti, from Proto-Balto-Slavic *manˀk-, from Proto-Indo-European *menHk-. Cognate with Lithuanian mìnkyti (to knead), Latvian mîcît (to knead), Old English menġan (to mix), and more distantly with Lithuanian mánkyti (to knead, to press, to crumple).
