[edit]Per Vasmer, possibly cognate with сечь (sečʹ, “to cut, to chop”) (1sg. секу́ (sekú)). Others propose a connection with Proto-Indo-European *h₂еḱ- (“sharp”) (whence Russian о́стрый (óstryj)), relating the term to Lithuanian ašakà (“fishbone”), also ãšaka.
