From Proto-Indo-European *mey- (to lessen, small, little). Cognate with Sanskrit (lessen, diminish); Lithuanian menkas (negligible); Ancient Greek μόνος (mónos, alone) whence English mono-; Latin minuō whence English minute, diminish, etc.; Latin minus, minor, minimum.
