From Proto-Khanty *ɬä̆ŋkər, from Proto-Uralic *šiŋere. Cognates include Northern Khanty лэӈкәр (leṇkər), Southern Khanty теӈкәр (tjeṇkər), Northern Mansi таӈкер (taňker), Hungarian egér and Komi-Zyrian шыр (šyr).
