Inherited from Proto-Slavic *listьje. By surface analysis, ліст (list) +‎ (-jo). Compare Polish liście and its back-formation liść, which may have influenced the alternative form ending in (-je). Other cognates include Russian ли́стья (lístʹja), Ukrainian ли́стя (lýstja).
