[edit]Inherited from Proto-Slavic *lubъ (“bast”), from Proto-Indo-European *lowbʰ-ó-s, from *lewbʰ- (“to peel, cut off, harm”). Cognate with Lithuanian lùpti (“to peel, to shell”), Latvian luba (“narrow strip of wood”), Latin liber (“book, inner bark of a tree”), Proto-Germanic *laubą (whence English leaf).
