Etymology

[edit]

From лист (lyst, letter; leaf) +‎ -о- (-o-, interfix) +‎ носити (nosyty, to carry) +‎ (-a, forms feminine nouns). Cognate with Serbo-Croatian листоноша, Czech listonoš, and Polish listonosz.

Ноша is a word in itself meaning "a load, what is carried; a burden; clothes", but in compound nouns it can also mean "carrier, bearer, the person that carries" as in Ukrainian книгоноша (knyhonoša, book bearer), Ukrainian міхоноша (mixonoša, sack bearer), Ukrainian зброєноша (zbrojenoša, arms-bearer), etc.
