Back-formation from летопи́сец (letopísec, chronicler, annalist) (per Shansky and Zhuravlev). For the initial stress, compare жи́вопись (žívopisʹ), на́дпись (nádpisʹ), по́дпись (pódpisʹ), за́пись (zápisʹ), etc.
