[edit]Unclear. Has been compared with Latin laxāre (“to loosen”). BER does not exclude borrowing (cf. Italian lasciare (“to leave”), whence Ottoman Turkish naval command لاشكا (laşka, “Release!, Relax!”) (a ship's sail)).
