From Proto-Permic *kulni, from Proto-Uralic *kale-. Cognates include Eastern Mari колаш (kolaš) and Finnish kuolla.

Permic cognates include Komi-Zyrian кувны (kuvny) and Komi-Yazva кулнө (kulnå).
