[edit]Inherited from Old East Slavic коното́пъ (konotópŭ), from Proto-Slavic *konotòpъ (“swamp in which the horse drowned”).[1] Cognate with dialectal Belarusian канато́п (kanatóp, “swamp, bog, marsh”).
