Borrowed from Greek κομμάτι (kommáti, piece), from Ancient Greek κομμάτιον (kommátion) - a diminutive of κόμμα (kómma, piece), which also gives English comma. Cognates include Serbo-Croatian комад, Slovene komad and Aromanian cumatã.
