[edit]From Proto-Slavic *koba, an alternative form of Proto-Slavic *kobь, whence Old Church Slavonic кобь (kobĭ, “destiny”).
BER further relates it with dialectal кобе́ц (kobéc, “sparrowhawk”), presumingly of expressive origin.
