From Proto-Samic *kārkkë, from Proto-Finnic *karkëda, from Proto-Finno-Permic *karketa.

Related to Finnish karkea and Udmurt курыт (kuryt). Cognates include Northern Sami gárkkis and Skolt Sami [Term?] (kar̀ʿkkɐ̑ᴅ).
