Erzya

[edit]

Etymology

[edit]

From Proto-Mordvinic *kirda, ultimately borrowed from Proto-Baltic *kerdā; compare Latvian kārta (layer; turn). Possibly via Proto-Finno-Volgaic *kerta, whence Proto-Finnic *kërta (time, occasion).

Sometimes also parsed as a doublet of Erzya кортамс (kortams, to talk); compare Finnish kertoa (to tell) (from kerta).
