Considered to derive from a -çık diminutive formation of Kipchak قمچی (kamçı), قمشی (kamşı), so a doublet of камчи́я (kamčíja) and камджи́я (kamdžíja, whip), forms that have come from Ottoman Turkish قامچی (kamçı), and probably hybridized into камши́я (kamšíja), камши́е (kamšíe).
