[edit]Uncertain. Possibly from Old East Slavic калига (kaliga, “pilgrim's footwear”), from Byzantine Greek καλίγα (kalíga), from Latin caliga. Alternatively, from Turkic, either the same as Etymology 1 or via some Turkic language from Arabic خَلْق (ḵalq, “people”).
