[edit]From Siberian Tatar ҡалыҡ (qalïq) and Kazakh халық (xalyq). Or from Classical Persian خَلْق (xalq), from Arabic خَلْق (ḵalq, “creation; creatures; people”). Compare also Shor қалық (qalïq, “people”) and Khakas халых (xalıx, “people”).
