[edit]Borrowed from Turkic language, probably from Ottoman Turkish قزان (kazan), ultimately from Proto-Turkic *kaŕgan. Сompare to Turkish kazan, Crimean Tatar qazan, Azerbaijani qazan, Kazakh қазан (qazan), Uzbek qozon. Cognate with Russian каза́н (kazán) (from Middle Russian каза́нъ (kazán), attested in 16th-17th centuries). First attested in c. 1600.
