[edit]From *esen ("healthy; safe and sound"); no consensus exists about further derivation.
Cognate with Old Uyghur [script needed] (esän, “healthy”); Tatar исән (isän, “healthy”), Kyrgyz эсен (esen, “safe and healthy”), Southern Altai эзен (ezen, “health, healthy”), Khakas изен (izen, “healthy”), Uzbek eson (“healthy”), etc.
