Etymology

According to Bulgarian Etymological Dicitonary, from Proto-Slavic *zьdati (to build) (whence standard Bulgarian зи́дам (zídam, to mason)) with dialectal widening of the yer *-ь- > -o-.

Compare also Lithuanian žãdas (speech, pledge).
