[edit]Inherited from Proto-Slavic *zъlodějь. By surface analysis, злы (zly) + -о- (-o-) + дзе́яць (dzjéjacʹ). Cognates include Ukrainian зло́дій (zlódij), Polish złodziej with the same meanings. The Russian злоде́й (zlodéj) means "villain".
