[edit]Borrowed from Russian за́мок (zámok, “castle”), itself from Czech zamek (“lock, castle”), which is a calque of German Schloss, from Proto-Slavic *zamъkъ.
Doublet of the native замка (zamka) (snare, knot (that locks)), from Proto-Slavic *zamъka.
