Etymology
[edit]From Proto-Mongolic *jaxan, from Proto-Common Turkic *ǰagan < *žaŋgan < Middle Chinese 象 (zjangX) < Old Chinese 象 (*ljaŋʔ).[1]
- Middle Mongol ᠵᠠᠭᠠᠨ (ǰaɣan), East Yugur jaan hgor;
- Proto-Common Turkic *žaŋgan > *yaŋan > Old Uyghur 𐽶𐽰𐽺𐽷𐽰 (yaŋa) > Western Yugur yaŋan;[1] and
- Proto-Tai *ɟaːŋꟲ (“elephant”) > Proto-Southwestern Tai *ɟaːŋꟲ² (“elephant”) > Thai ช้าง (cháang).[2][3]
False cognate of Proto-Dravidian *yĀnay (“elephant”) (whence Tamil யானை (yāṉai)).
