Inherited from Old East Slavic жизнь (žiznĭ), from Proto-Slavic *žiznь. By surface analysis, жить (žitʹ) +‎ -знь (-znʹ). Cognates include Old Church Slavonic жизнь (žiznĭ), Old Polish żyźń.
