[edit]Inherited from Old Slovak žartovať, from Middle High German serten. By surface analysis, жарта (žarta) + -овац (-ovac). Cognates include Belarusian жартава́ць (žartavácʹ), Czech žertovat, Polish żartować, Slovak žartovať and Ukrainian жартува́ти (žartuváty).
