Old Novgorodian
[edit]Etymology
[edit]Inherited from Proto-Slavic *dъždžьcь, from *dъ̀ždžь (“rain”) with Old Pskovian reflex *zdj > жг (źg) in comparison with the typical Eastern Old Novgorodian *zdj > *ждж (*ždž).[1] By surface analysis, дъжгь (dŭźgĭ, “rain”) + -ьць (-ĭćĭ). First attested in 1114. Cognate with Ukrainian доще́ць (doščécʹ).
