Borrowed from Classical Persian دوسْت (dōst), from Middle Persian 𐭣𐭥𐭮𐭲𐭩 (dwst' /⁠dōst⁠/), from Old Persian 𐎭𐎢𐏁𐎫𐎠 (d-u-š-t-a /⁠dauštā⁠/), from Proto-Indo-European *ǵews- (to taste, to try).
