[edit]Fossilized locative singular of Proto-Slavic *dolъ (“valley”) (u-stem in Old Church Slavonic and Bulgarian). Compare го́ре (góre, “up”), originally "to/on the mountain", and note the semantic parallels with English down, originally "from the hill" (compare dialectal English down (“hill”) and English dune, derived from the same Germanic word).
