Unclear. Perhaps from жмя́ (žmjá, to squeeze) (dialectal) +‎ -за (-za) (< *gъmъza). Compare dialectal Serbo-Croatian гма̑зд (swarm), Russian го́моз (gómoz, mob, pack).
