Etymology

Uncertain. According to Vl. Georgiev, possibly coined by Pencho Slaveykov on the basis of Bulgarian гъмжа́ (gǎmžá, to diffuse) (from Proto-Slavic *gъmьzati) or possibly a resultant noun of *žęti (to compress) +‎ *-ežь.
