From Proto-Slavic *gǫgrica, probably from Proto-Slavic *ǫgrъ (vermin, serpent, creep) + -ица (-ica) (with initial *g- similar to Bulgarian гъсени́ца (gǎseníca, caterpillar) from Proto-Slavic *ǫsěnica).
