From the present participle гряду́щий (grjadúščij, approaching), from грясти́ (grjastí, to be coming, to be approaching) (грядёт (grjadjót)), from Old East Slavic грѧсти (gręsti), from Proto-Slavic *gręsti (to go), from Proto-Indo-European *gʰrHdʰ-. Cognate with Latin gradior, Gothic 𐌲𐍂𐌹𐌳 (grid, step), English progress, congress, ingress, grade.
