[edit]From Proto-Slavic *griva. Cognate with Ukrainian гри́ва (hrýva), Russian гри́ва (gríva), Latvian grĩva (“river mouth”), Avestan 𐬔𐬭𐬍𐬎𐬎𐬁 (grīuuā, “neck”), Sanskrit ग्रीवा (grīvā́, “neck”).
