From вуннӑ (vunnă, ten) +‎ -мӗш (-mĕš, ordinal suffix), compare Bulgar [script needed] (wânım, tenth).[1]

Cognate with Khalaj ônminci, Turkish onuncu, Uzbek oʻninchi, Bashkir унынсы (unınsı) and Yakut онус (onus).
