Inherited from Old East Slavic въздыхати (vŭzdyxati).[1] By surface analysis, вз- (vz-) +‎ ды́хать (dýxatʹ) +‎ -а́ть (-átʹ). Compare Belarusian уздыха́ць (uzdyxácʹ).
