Etymology
[edit]Derived from Old East Slavic вьрвь (vĭrvĭ), from Proto-Slavic *vьrvь (deverbal of *verti), from Proto-Indo-European *wer- (“to tie, string; rope”) which is ultimately cognate with *wer- (“to turn, bend”) whence the two meanings of the verb. Compare Russian верёвка (verjóvka), whence Ukrainian вірьо́вка (virʹóvka).
