[edit]First attested in 1847. Inherited from Proto-Slavic *buřelomъ. By surface analysis, бу́ря (búrja) + -е- (-e-) + лома́ть (lomátʹ), calque of German Windbruch, whence also ветроло́м (vetrolóm) [Arapova].
