- count form, numerical plural form A remnant of the grammatical dual number, used in the masculine whenever there is a precise amount of something, regardless of the actual number. Some nouns have no count form, so they are used only with general plural (see examples 5 and 6)
- Много моливи. (general plural) ― Mnogo molivi. (general plural) ― Many pencils.
- Три молива. (count form) ― Tri moliva. (count form) ― Three pencils.
- Много ученици. (general plural) ― Mnogo učenici. (general plural) ― Many students.
- Двама ученика. (count form) ― Dvama učenika. (count form) ― Two students.
- Много мъже. (general plural) ― Mnogo mǎže. (general plural) ― Many men.
- Петима мъже. (count form) ― Petima mǎže. (count form) ― Five men.
Usage notes
[edit]- In modern Bulgarian the use of the count form for nouns, which represent people, is frowned upon and is considered incorrect by some.
- The word човек (čovek) has two equivalent count forms - човека и души.
- The general plural is used in all cases where the noun have no count form, like with мъж (mǎž).
