Etymology
[edit]From Arabic شِشْبَرَك (šišbarak) (with assimilation of /š/ to /b/ due to influence of word "barak" and epenthesis of /m/, id est: *bišbarak > *bišbarmak), from Middle Persian *ǰōšpārag (“dumpling”) (lit. "boiled piece"). Folkly and traditionally etymologized as "five fingers, five-fingered". Not related to Azerbaijani Beşbarmaq (toponym). Cognate with Kazakh тұшпара (tūşpara, “dumpling”), Uzbek barak (“dumpling”), Uzbek tuxum barak (“egg dumpling”) etc.
