Etymology
[edit]In the sense of the main Kazakh dish it was probably first introduced by Tatar and Bashkir translators, that were sent by Russians. The word was formed by confusion with «бишбармак» ("five fingers"), another dish, which is called нарын (naryn) in Kazakh. It was then remodeled by the influence of Kazakh бес (bes) (also see: бешбармақ (beşbarmaq)). Kazakhs have only traditionally called the dish ет (et). [1]
Synchronically analyzable as бес (bes, “five”) + бармақ (barmaq, “finger”).
