Inherited from Proto-Slavic *bagatьje, from Proto-Slavic *bagati. Related to бажа́ти (bažáty), багну́ти (bahnúty). Distantly related to English bake, Ancient Greek φώγω (phṓgō), Phrygian βεκος (bekos).
