[edit]From Proto-Mordvinic *äšťəms ~ *aštəms. Ultimately possibly connected to Proto-Mordvinic *äźə-, from Proto-Uralic *ëśe- (“to exist, be located”). Compare also dialectal Erzya eščems and aštoms (“to live”).[1]
