[edit]Borrowed from German Archäologie, from Ancient Greek ἀρχαιολογία (arkhaiología, “antiquarian lore, ancient legends, history”), from ἀρχαῖος (arkhaîos, “primal, old, ancient”), with -ло́гія (-lóhija) ending from Ancient Greek -λογία (-logía). Compare Russian археоло́гия (arxeológija), Belarusian археало́гія (arxjealóhija), Polish archeologia.
