From Proto-Finno-Ugric *aŋa- (to loosen, open (up), untie). Cognate with Finnish avanto (ice hole), avata (to open), Northern Mansi [script needed] (āŋkwi, to open, to take off, to skin), Northern Khanty эӈкта (eṇkta, to open, to take off, to unfasten), Hungarian old (to solve, to untie).
