Back-formation from абитурие́нт (abiturijént, abituriént). with final -a by analogy with other nouns ending in -тура (-tura). Compare German Abitur.

Compare also collective suffixes -я́та (-játa) (e.g. ребя́та (rebjáta)), -ота́ (-otá) (e.g. школота (školota), гопота (gopota)).
